Three Tips
Helping to Clear That Winter FOG
Fats, Oils and Grease (FOGs) are the leading cause of sewer blockages. We can help to lift the FOG, keep our wastewater systems in good order and reduce the costs of maintenance throughout the infrastructure by educating the consumer to follow a few simple steps. “Many clients see restaurants and other commercial outlets as the main problem when it comes to FOG disposal,” says Chris McMillen. “While it’s true that the bulk of FOG generation comes through this sector, they also tend to be the most environmentally aware and have processes in place to dispose of their waste appropriately through grease traps and other collection methods. The issue is these facilities are not in place in homes, so we need to educate our consumers. The good news is it only takes a few simple steps to ensure we don’t have these potentially costly problems,” he added.
Here are Three Tips consumers should follow to help clear the FOG.
- Put cooked oil, grease and food scraps in collection containers, not in home garbage disposals.
- Address leaks and spills immediately and install grease traps to separate FOG from wastewater if needed.
- Beware of products that claim to dissolve grease. They may dislodge a blockage but they only push the problem further down the line.
