How to Minimize Your Chloride Use
Salt is our friend when it comes to de-icing but overuse can pollute waterways, harm animals and kill plant life. Here are some tips you can share with your customers that can make a difference.
- Only spread the minimum amount of salt needed. A little salt goes a long way – 8 ounces of scattered de-icer can cover a 20-foot driveway. Remember when the temperature is below 15 degrees, salt won’t work.
- Replace old water softeners or lower the salt setting. You may not even need one, so test your water for hardness.
- Consider the source: Do all of your outlets such as toilets and hoses really need to be softened? Have a plumber re-route them.
