The Clear Take on Water and Wastewater Today

How to Minimize Your Chloride Use

Salt is our friend when it comes to de-icing but overuse can pollute waterways, harm animals and kill plant life. Here are some tips you can share with your customers that can make a difference.

  1. Only spread the minimum amount of salt needed. A little salt goes a long way – 8 ounces of scattered de-icer can cover a 20-foot driveway. Remember when the temperature is below 15 degrees, salt won’t work.
  2. Replace old water softeners or lower the salt setting. You may not even need one, so test your water for hardness.
  3. Consider the source: Do all of your outlets such as toilets and hoses really need to be softened? Have a plumber re-route them.
