The Clear Take on Water and Wastewater Today

Industry Briefs

Virus Removal During the Pandemic

As you read in the article above, many communities rely on lakes, rivers and streams for their water supply. One downside of this is that water can contain various contaminants that can be harmful to humans. To meet industry standards, utilities must treat their wastewater with advanced treatment methods. Most treatments include a physical screening, grit removal and settling and secondary treatment to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus loading. All of this is followed by a disinfection step to inactivate pathogens.

Facilities that treat drinking water typically use coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration and then end with disinfection. According to WaterWorld, the filtration step can remove anywhere from zero to 99.97 percent of viruses. And disinfection, usually with chlorine or chloramine, can achieve 99 percent virus removal.

Because of the use of multiple treatment methods, you can rest easy knowing the chance of any virus, like COVID, getting into your water is very low.
